Banana tree

Banana tree

Banana tree (Musa Japonica)

It is an evergreen perennial tree of the family Musaceae. In Greece it is cultivated mainly in Crete. Rational nutrition is one of the most effective factors to increase the growth and productivity of these trees. However, rational fertilisation is a combination of a number of factors and interactions. The nutrition programme should aim at optimising inputs, increasing yield, quality, while protecting the environment, soil fertility and the sustainability of the crop. Banana is demanding in various nutrients but mainly has high requirements for Potassium and Magnesium. In addition, the use of special nutrient formulations – biostimulants – maximises the genetic potential of the crop, while ensuring that its resistance to abiotic stress is enhanced.

Crop Recommendation Program

Crop Recommendation Program

The effectiveness of fertilisation and the necessary corrections are always made according to the recommendations of the agricultural engineer.

Because the rational fertilisation of banana trees is always assessed in relation to:

  • The specificity of the area
  • Physical and chemical properties of the soil
  • Long-term observations
  • Amount of precipitation
  • Tree age
  • Variety
