Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

It is an annual herbaceous vegetable of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is cultivated for its fruit, which is eaten unripe, fresh in salads, as an appetizer. However, there are also varieties of cucumber suitable for pickling. Globally, in terms of area under cultivation, 3/4 of the cucumbers are grown in Asia and ¼ in Europe. In Greece, it is grown in Crete (Tympaki, Ierapetra, etc.) and in the Peloponnese (Ilia, Messinia and Lakonia). There are smaller areas in other regions such as Thessaloniki, the islands, etc. Cucumber is a plant which has high nutritional requirements for high yields and enhanced quality of harvested products.
